In 2017, Nathaniel Garcia began the Portrait of an American Woman project. The  project consists of weekly, one hour portrait sittings and interview. The audio interview is available on SoundCloud and iTunes. The video interviews are below.

Meet Vera, a 25 year old artist from Oakland, CA. Vera was born in  France to an American father and Vietnamese mother. She went to school in France until she was 7, then moved to San Francisco where she grew  up. Vera went to college in Massachusetts and she studied math and science, but now works as a full time artist. She made a shift from science to  art because she felt disappointed by the lack of answers science could offer. 

Meet Hannah, a 24 year old artist from Davis, CA. Hannah recently moved  to Oakland where she works in a sensory deprivation tank shop. People float in a saline tank for up to 3 hours. Hannah discusses her experiences and how it has  benefited her life.  Hannah loves movies and makes art and music.  Every week, Nathaniel Garcia paints and interviews an American Woman. P.S. Meet Farhana from Oakland, California. Farhana grew up in a small town called Niles, Michigan but she was born in India. Farhana studied economics and psychology in college and works in risk management for a financial institution in San Francisco. Farhana is married and has two daughters. She is most proud of her  experiences that have contributed to her being a mindful person and how it has affected how she approaches parenting.   

Meet Daphne. Daphne was born in Cleveland, OH and grew  up with a strong interest in the arts. She talks about a childhood piano teacher that she took lessons from in Cleveland and the  significance of how this teacher's role in her life. Daphne moved to Toledo as an adolescent and her interests shifted to  ballet dancing. She talks about one particularly exciting experience  when her childhood role model, Melissa Hayden, came to Toledo to teach a master class.    

Meet Keturah, a 20 year old music video producer from Oakland, CA. Keturah commuted to San Francisco everyday for high school where she learned to create art. She talks extensively about how she didn't quite fit in at the school where prominent and wealthy families sent their children. Keturah speaks fondly of her trip to New York.

Meet Gwenn, a 24 year old horse trainer from Northampton, MA. Gwenn ended up in Oakland after a cross-country road trip with her friends led to the Bay Area. She has been riding horses since she was 8 years old but she had to stop for a couple years after an injury led to a chronic condition known as pneumothorax. Gwenn studied psychology and Spanish in college and aspires to one day become a therapist.

Meet Elle, a performer and Uber driver from Chico, CA. Elle is  originally from Fernley Valley, NV and has lived in Reno and Modesto. Recently, Elle came out as a transgender woman and talks extensively  about her experiences transitioning. Elle loves to dance and perform as a comedian. She also works as a  burlesque dancer. Elle would, one day, like to run a foster home.

Meet Jacqueline, a 22 year old student and model from Alameda,  California. Jacqueline is in her last year of college where she is  studying animation and visual effects. She also enjoys acting and has  been in comedies, dramas and science fiction roles. Jacqueline hopes to  travel to Europe one day.

Meet Meiraf, a 23 year old barista and server, who has lived all over  the United States, including Maryland, North Carolina and now, Berkeley,  California. Meiraf is a first generation Ethiopian-American and once  spent a summer working at a hotel in Ethiopia. Meiraf aspires to own and  operate a restaurant one day.

Meet Cate, a 21 year old server from Toledo, Ohio. Cate moved to  Berkeley, California two years ago, from Chicago where she was going to  college for performing arts. Cate is a twin and her sister is currently  studying in architecture in Japan. Cate aspires to be a professional  actress.

Meet Rebeca, a 21 year old artist and model from Oakland, California.  Rebeca was home schooled until her teenage years when she enrolled  herself in high school. Rebeca aspires to move to New York City and  create.

Meet Brittany, a Berkeley artist who is originally from Iowa. Brittany  has lived in many cities in the United States including Las Vegas, where  she worked at Caesar's Palace and all around the Bay Area. She is the  youngest of seven kids and enjoys painting.

Meet Stesha, a French and Russian language translator from Albany,  California. Stesha went to college in Michigan and has lived in  Switzerland. She volunteers for the Sierra Club and enjoys spending time  with her younger sister.
